How to Swim Faster – 3 Steps to Faster Strokes

There are many reasons you may be interested in learning how to swim faster.

You may be a high school student interested in making the school team or securing a scholarship to swim in college. You may be an athlete ready to improve your time in a triathlon. You may just be a recreational swimmer or someone who swims for fitness, and you want to push yourself to go faster and work harder.

Whatever your reasons may be for learning how to swim faster, you will take the same three steps to start improving your stroke speed:

  • 1. Perfect your technique on the strokes you want to swim faster.

You cannot swim faster if you do not have the basic technique of your stroke down. If you are a complete beginner with a stroke, then you will have to learn technique before you can focus on speed. If you have more swimming skill, then make sure you have technique down before moving on to the next step.

  • 2. Make sure you are putting in at least three serious swims each week.

Splashing around with the kids or relaxing with friends does not count here. If you want to learn how to swim faster, you have to commit yourself to jumping in the pool and putting in a serious swim at least a few times a week.


If you are interested in swimming professionally, you should consider swimming daily. Some athletes swim for hours a day, or put in multiple swims each day. How much time you commit depends on your goals, but you should be putting in at least three challenging swims a week if you seriously want to learn how to swim faster.

  • 3. Start working with well designed swimming workouts, rather than simply swimming laps.

Doing laps back and forth across the pool can give you a workout, but it isn’t the most effective way to learn how to swim faster. Start working with workouts that incorporate free swims, drills, kicking exercises, and other training strategies.

When you start swimming at least three times a week, you will want to do more than swim up and down your lane. A formal workout will make your time in the water more enjoyable and more productive.

    Swimming faster seems like it has much less to do with strength than I had originally imagined. My 13 year old nephew swims much faster than I do and I happen to be very fit for someone of my age, so that leads me to believe that for the average person speed in the water is more about technique than anything else. I’m pretty sure I won’t reach my full speed until I’m taught the very basics of swimming from a real swimming coach.

    I could actually swim pretty fast and I’ve even beaten all my friends who got lessons from expensive swimming teachers from when they were young. But like Brayden, I don’t use the right techniques to swim properly, so imagine how fast I could swim once I nail down the correct swimming techniques. Maybe I should tryout for the swimming team and I see how I fare.
